LOVE THE ART, HATE JAIL

seniorbob_blog

So, I’m totally into wheat-pasting. However, the risk of going to jail doesn’t sound that great to me. I’ve also been trying to figure out how the hell I’m going to get rid of all that plywood out in my garage. Solution?… go through cool photos I’ve taken, convert them to black and white, graphic images, print them out tiled on my crappy home printer, make some wheat-paste and slap it on some of that unused plywood. This is what you get.

I’m not exactly sure where this is going, but I’m having a great deal of fun doing it. I may expand on the style with a little paint here and there, but we’ll see. I’ve committed myself to doing pieces of all my best friends to see where this takes me… I may even venture past my garage, we’ll see.

I’ve done one other piece so far of myself, which I’ll post soon, and I plan on doing so many more of these I won’t know what to do with them. If you’re interested in purchasing one, send me a message and we can work out a cost for materials, time and shipping if you life outside of the Austin, TX area.

WHEN GRAPHIC DESIGNERS DO PORTRAITS

dsc_1661

Here’s one that my wife and I worked on together. This was our first attempt at taking senior photos, on location, with limited time, in multiple locations, with different lighting setups. This particular shot was actually taken on the second day of shooting. The first day was up on the cliffs overlooking the Highway 360 Bridge in Austin, TX.

As for the post processing, this is also at a time I was still trying to find my groove. After many hours of trying different things, inspired by a few different photographers I highly respect, I finally got myself into a solid workflow that remains my process still to this day.

I’m very pleased with how these came out. The student/parents were open to just letting us do our thing with it and it worked out great. I’m hoping we can get more gigs like this, it was fun.

You can find the rest of this shoot on the photo page.

DIA DE LOS FOTOS

dsc0055

I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to get this shoot posted on my blog, but here it is at long last. I did this shoot with my good friends Bob and Christina last October for their anniversary party. This was the first shoot I did with a DIY beauty dish I built, as well as, the three off-camera strobes I had just bought. I shot this right around sunset/dusk so I had very little time to get the lighting right. Needless to say, I think I pulled it off in the 45 minutes I had to setup and shoot before it was to dark. This is still one of my favorite shoots so far.

I’ve actually started pulling pieces to do wheat-pastings on plywood… but that’s for another entry. You can see the rest of the photos in this series on the photo page.

I TOTALLY LAPSED MY PANTS

A while back we got a new video camera at work, a Panasonic HMC40 to be exact. In order to familiarize myself with it, I took it home over the weekend and decided to concentrate on doing time lapse. While this has obviously been fiddled with, I thought it ended up looking cool enough to post.

UPDATE
I should’ve posted the original for those that don’t like the hippy version, so here you go.

WHEN HOBBIES COLLIDE

dsc0179-edit_web

They say on a motorcycle, it’s “crash” not “accident.” I don’t remember exactly why that is, but either way, it freakin’ hurts when you go down. Anywho… not that any of that has anything to do with this awesome photo, I just needed to start the entry off on the right foot.

So yeah, lets combine hobbies. I dig photography, I also really like my motorcycle. That being said, a couple weeks ago, I decided to head out to the garage, wrap a giant piece of black felt around my bike to get rid of all the reflections, and put my camera through a little hole I cut into the side of it all to get this shot. This was more of an experiment with single lighting on chrome to not only get the dramatic shot, but to also see if I could get rid of all the reflections. As far as I’m concerned, I was successful. You can bet I’m going to take a lot more shots like this one.
